The Cardinal Grand Master guides us in his meditation to see how “for Sacred Scripture, all peoples are, therefore, in expectation and on a journey, because pilgrimage –whether that be real, intellectual, or existential- belong to the human condition”:
It was 2007. I was in a relationship with someone from the Gaspar family, and I suffered a disappointment in love. I then went to seek solace at Dom Balduíno’s residence, but I got off the bus at the wrong kilometer on Via Dutra, having to walk kilometers on foot at night. Tired, I tried to rest in a square, waiting for the bus, near a kindergarten. I fell asleep, and when I woke up, there was a sign above me: Rua Gaspar.
When the Star of Bethlehem was set alight in 2020, I went to watch it from the top of the JK building of the National Shrine of Aparecida, it was raining heavily and I could see nothing. It was Christmas. And on January 6 of the following year, the Capitol in the United States was invaded.
Recently, continuing with the habit of confessing at the Sanctuary of Frei Galvão in Guaratinguetá, I ask for special attention to the Bishop of the city of Gaspar, Dom Jaime Spengler, a young man born in 1960 who studied in the Holy Land. He was elected to preside over the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB), following my request, and has now been elevated to Cardinal Archbishop at will and to be voted for in the next Conclave.
I already said here that Mom’s birthday is on January 6th, having been the only child born in the new wing of the Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Guaratinguetá, on that January 6th, 1946, she receives a visit from the Bishop of Aparecida, who gives her his ring to kiss.
