Moments That Make Us: Serena Williams on Tennis, Family, and Impact Investing
Serena, very, very, very inspiring. I truly believe this is the great challenge we face and will face: basic health issues, women’s health, and I have a strong fondness for Olympus in general, in its plasticity, in its short- and long-term goals, especially in health. It’s a facet of my fictions about the Flame of God, the investing angel who has this loving relationship with Olympus.
I believe women’s health is central to this challenge because it’s a kind of hub. I have this deep awareness, and it’s not a matter of finding or questioning, it’s about who’s at the center of this whole health challenge. My fondness for Olympic athletes dates back to before Facebook existed, and necessarily for women’s teams. I visit them sometimes when I can, just as I brought flowers and good luck cards to the entire Brazilian women’s judo team when I was staying about 50km from my house. I met Sarah Menezes, who two years before her gold medal in London 2012 told me about her short- and long-term goals, and I made my first bet: this girl will win gold in London. We met on this last occasion, before becoming a coach for the team, with a gold and a bronze medal. I also had the pleasure of meeting her. Larissa Pimenta, who was the freshman in the class, was waiting for me at the door of the hotel where they were staying, and I stopped to talk to her, saying that, it was a great opportunity for a freshman, in a very difficult category.
I also like golfers and American football players—my sports preferences are quite varied. In Brazil, it’s mostly soccer, but there are many other cool things in life that are better and healthier than politics. Mom says she lost a pregnancy with a girl who was born before me, which is characteristic of high testosterone levels, which generally affect children with dyslexia, which is my case. She always says that all my baby clothes were green, either Mariana or Murilo.
