New Actors

New Actors

Murilo Jambeiro de Oliveira

Brazil, December 29, 2024.

The most constant feeling of the present times is that we are all in a declared total war in the world, and in this situation we have to avoid fratricide, that is, the fight of brothers of the country against brothers of the country. For example, since Brazil has a positive balance of trade, a greater inflow of dollars than outflow, and more than that, with its public accounts in order, it is now called upon to pay more interest to international investors. Contrary to the movement of interest rates lowering worldwide, the requirement for Brazilians is to sustain international rentierism.

It wasn’t that many years ago that I was no longer at least aware of the national economy, that there was the “Overnight” there was a financial application that only people with a certain purchasing power could access, which yielded interest overnight, during a period of hyperinflation. But at that age I did not observe as I do today how a series of tragic events are linked together, especially in a situation of total war, and the partisanship of the actors.

And this is the point at which I believe that at this point in time the partisanship of the actors was, and perhaps still is, a mistake. It is clear that it is and was difficult during this period to ignore what is happening in the Holy Land, and it is clear that we have heard a lot about the issue of Ukraine, but there is a window of opportunity in some parts of the world with the change of political actors, before a greater escalation of hostilities. Such as the arrival of the Labour Party in the government of the United Kingdom again, the arrival of Donald Trump as President of the United States of America, the new Prime Minister of France, and the elections in Germany, among other relevant facts, in relation to new political actors, and new possibilities.

Often this, the opportunity for the emergence of new political actors, creates a favorable environment for other alignments in international politics, which do not result in a succession of inexplicable tragedies. And especially, more goodwill among people towards each other. Brazil, for example, can, politically, make more clear choices, but in practice it has been experiencing a wide range of international relations for some time, which has always given it a certain moral authority on the international scene, capable of hovering above good and evil. It should not disregard this.

My end-of-year wishes are that these new actors, such as those in the United Kingdom, the United States, France, or Germany, will be new alternatives, new paths, new guidelines, and new strategies for this side of the world, for the thriving democracies that are just like Brazil. If it is a mistake to be pessimistic at a time like this, each one should make their contribution to the best of their ability, so that all new actors are happy with the future of humanity, at this complex time of constant hostilities spread throughout the world.

I still remember my mother saying that she, who was born in 1946, never noticed any war, while my grandmother, who was born in 1922, used to talk about the gasoline shortage at a certain age, about the abandonment of my great-grandfather’s mansion, and in fact, for a long time the Cold War only affected a certain type of problem: Brazil’s international debt in the 1980s, which generated a lot of poverty, but there was no hostility, perhaps fatality, so widespread. And as for this type of management of public resources capable of preventing the increase in poverty and national debt, Brazil has gathered a lot of knowledge since the 1980s and put its house in order.
