The thing is that Vale do Paraiba, where I come from, has a German influence that I think is never really explained, if not for the notion that we have Liebherr and BASF in Guaratinguetá, Volkswagen in Taubaté, and Bayer in São José dos Campos, to speak only of the region today. In truth, since Guaratinguetá was all just my family’s property, my first memory is of my grandmother receiving German settlers on her father’s farm during the war, and Vargas giving her the first bicycle in the city, which had come from Germany for her. I attribute some of the German ways to her. Not mine, and sometimes no more than French, but it’s a kind of curiosity I have about life.
