In truth, since Guaratinguet\u00e1 was all just my family&#8217;s property, my first memory is of my grandmother receiving German settlers on her father&#8217;s farm during the war, and Vargas giving her the first bicycle in the city, which had come from Germany for her. I attribute some of the German ways to her.
